Portable ice makers get really dirty over time. When you see the dirt collecting inside your ice maker, your ice tastes weird or the ice isn’t as large as it should be, then it’s time to clean your unit.

If you don’t have an ice maker or an ice cube tray, there are some really creative ways to make ice cubes without the use of a tray.

We recommend that you follow these helpful steps to keep your ice maker clean at all times. We found these steps from Ice Maker Geeks in their article on How To Clean a Portable Ice Maker. You can click on the link to learn more important steps.

You’ll also find a video on Ice Maker Geeks that will walk you through the process.

    1. Empty the ice maker by using the drain plug that’s found on the side of the unit or on the bottom.
    2. Fill your ice maker with fresh water and add a cleaning solution.
    3. Run your ice cycle several times making a couple baskets of ice. You can also use a self-cleaning feature if you have one.
    4. Once completed, empty all the water from ice maker again using the drain plug.
    5. Add fresh water to the ice maker with the drain plug removed. This will give the ice maker a good rinse.
    6. You want to make sure that you completely rinse the unit so that you do not taste the cleaning solution.
    7. Once rinsed, you’re ready to start the ice cycle again.
    8. Make several batches of ice and throw it all out. We’re just looking to rinse the machine further.
    9. Once you’ve made 2 baskets of ice – your ice maker is clean and ready to start making ice for your friends and family.

Keeping your ice maker clean is important to making sure that your customers are happy. I recommend that you clean your ice maker at least once every three months.
